The Big Picture: How to inspire your team to see beyond the horizon

The Big Picture: How to inspire your team to see beyond the horizon

You’re probably tired of reading that as a leader, you need to be able to step back and always keep your vision - the big picture - in mind. However, and here’s the real challenge, having a vision counts for very little if you can’t motivate your team to help you achieve it. In other words, a vision is only as powerful as the commitment it inspires in others.

What's in it for me?

To engage your team wholeheartedly in the vision, you must answer their inevitable question: What's in it for me?

The first step is to understand how your broad organisational goals connect with individual aspirations and motivations. In what ways will focusing on the big picture enhance a team member’s skills, career opportunities, job satisfaction, and work-life balance? Unless the benefits are obvious and unambiguous, you will struggle to bring your people on the journey with you.

Strive to make this connection clear through regular meetings, personalised discussions, and public recognition of team contributions towards long-term objectives. This will help not only to retain talent but also to foster a culture of loyalty and enthusiasm for the company’s big picture.

Communicating the Vision

Understanding the benefits is a good start, but ‘selling’ them to your people is just as important. Effective communication ensures that every stakeholder, from the C-suite to entry-level recruits, understands both what the goals are as well as their role in achieving them. Communication needs to be clear, consistent, and continuous. It involves storytelling, where you as leader paint a vivid picture of the future and the path your organisation is on to get there.

Segmentation

Understanding your audience is also key. Different stakeholders may require tailored messages that resonate with their specific roles and concerns. For example, financial backers might be more interested in the long-term ROI of the vision, while team members might be more concerned with how it affects their day-to-day tasks and career growth.

Let the journey begin

So you have the big picture, and your teams are persuaded and motivated to deliver it. What else can you do to keep everyone on track?

Set clear milestones: Break down the vision into manageable, clear milestones that act as progress markers towards the larger goal. This helps team members see the immediate value of their work and how it contributes to long-term success.

Encourage strategic thinking: Promote a culture where team members are encouraged to think strategically about their tasks. For example, you might involve them in workshops and training sessions that help them understand market trends, competitor analysis, and business forecasting.

Lead by example: Demonstrate big picture thinking in your own decision-making and problem-solving. When you address challenges by aligning solutions with the organisational vision, you set an example for your team to follow.

Foster open communication: Encourage and value feedback. This includes upward feedback from employees, as well as downward and horizontal communication that reinforces the vision and the strategic value of everyday tasks.

Reward and recognise: Implement recognition programs that reward contributions that align with and support the big picture. Recognition can be as grand as awards for major achievements or as simple as acknowledging someone’s effort during a team meeting.

Ensuring that every member of your team is aligned with your overarching vision isn't just beneficial, it's essential for sustainable growth. Get the foundations in place, and the big picture becomes a shared vision, propelling your organisation to new heights.
