Embracing Vulnerability: The Power of Not Knowing



How easy do you find it to say ‘I don’t know’?


I'll confess - I was once the typical 'control freak' manager. 


I believed my role required having all the answers, always ready to lead my team and handle every situation with  unwavering confidence.


Then something happened that transformed my perspective. During a crucial presentation, a colleague posed a question about something that I felt I ‘should’ know. It had me stumped, and in that fleeting instant I felt vulnerable, my supposed shortcomings laid bare for all to see. 


I had to utter those three dreaded words ‘ I don’t know’, a formidable challenge for me at the time.


However, acknowledging my uncertainty turned into a pivotal revelation. Far from signalling the end of my career, my admission created a much more valuable and open conversation, giving others the chance to input and support the situation.


It also showed my vulnerability, which I discovered is much more powerful than the  control freak-all-knowing act.


These three little words ‘I don’t know’ can wield tremendous power. Acknowledging that you don't have all the answers does far more than merely display your humanity - it cultivates trust, forges connection, and creates a more empowering environment. 


Embracing this ethos, I have championed the profound impact of vulnerability and honesty in leadership ever since. 


The Shift from Control to Collaboration


As my leadership journey evolved, I realised the value of moving from a controlling to an empowering style. Seeking out the ideas and opinions of team members brought diverse perspectives to the table and enhanced team motivation and engagement.


By encouraging team members to participate in the decision-making process, you enable them to take ownership of their work, establishing a more collaborative team atmosphere.




That’s why when a team member approaches with a question or challenge it’s important to encourage them to suggest one or more potential solutions before you jump in and be the ‘rescuer’ or ‘controller’.


Fostering an environment where you guide rather than command cultivates a culture rich in creativity and innovation.


Vulnerability and Honesty


Recognising that you don't need to have all the answers is both an act of vulnerability and a hallmark of mature leadership. It reveals you as relatable and approachable, demonstrating a preference for authenticity and humility over pretence or arrogance.


Simply put, honesty is invariably the best policy. It commands far greater respect than the façade of omniscience.


So, today's mission is to embrace your limitations and be aware of moments when you're tempted to provide a hasty answer to a question. By acknowledging this tendency, you will foster stronger and more authentic relationships with both your team and your clients.
